Case study

What a console firmware update actually breaks

After a Yamaha QL5 firmware update, OverDrive lost the board and only 3 of 14 Dante sources came back. Getting to air first, then rebuilding.

Symptom

After a firmware update on a control room Yamaha QL5:

  • OverDrive lost its connection to the audio board.
  • Only 3 of 14 Dante sources came back.

There was a news show at 1 PM.

Order of operations

  1. Get audio to the board first. Air comes before tidiness. Audio was restored before the 1 PM show.
  2. Rebuild the Dante setup: subscriptions and device configuration that didn’t survive the update.
  3. Rebuild the HA setup.

The lessons-learned list

The most useful output was a list of everything that needed rebuilding after the firmware upgrade. Next time, that list is the pre-update checklist: capture it all before, verify it all after.

Takeaway

A firmware update is a configuration change, not just a software change. Plan the rollback and the rebuild before you press the button.
