What it does
NetAuto connects to each Nexus and Catalyst switch, runs a set of read-only show commands, and saves the output with a timestamp. It gives me a before/after record around every change, and a history to compare against when something drifts.
How it’s built
- Python with Netmiko 4.7
- Runs from a Linux utility VM inside its own venv, set up per a written SOP
- Read-only by design: it collects, it doesn’t configure
The pattern
The inventory stays private. The pattern is simple enough to share:
for each switch in the inventory:
connect (Netmiko, platform-specific device type)
for each show command in the list:
run it
save output to <switch>/<YYYY-MM-DD_HHMM>/<command>.txt
disconnect
log successes and failures to a run log
Separate platform types matter: NX-OS and IOS-XE don’t share every command, so the command list is per platform.

I’m moving toward API/JSON-based automation instead of SSH screen-scraping, so output can be compared as data instead of text. That’s part of my CCNP ENCOR study.
