Dante Virtual Soundcard: "No audio data"

DVS subscriptions failed on an edit suite. The cause wasn't Dante at all. Windows had moved the NIC to a Public profile.

Symptom

Subscriptions to the Dante Virtual Soundcard on a Pro Tools edit suite failed with “No audio data.” The suite had been working.

What I checked

The error looks like a Dante problem. The suite’s design is in Pro Tools and Dante edit suite. The answer turned out to be on the Windows side of the machine.

Root cause

Windows had reset the Dante NIC to a Public network profile. The Dante firewall rules only applied to the Private profile, so on Public the traffic DVS needed was blocked.

Fix

Changed the NIC’s network profile back to Private. DVS locked as a PTP follower, and latency was stable.

Takeaway

When a Dante endpoint is a Windows PC, the network profile is part of the audio path. It can change without anyone touching it, and it cost me a day.
